Chaotic Abyss
                                      A Brief History of LEMNOS

Lemnos is a troubled land with a history of brutal warfare and short fitful periods of peace.  The history of Lemnos is separated into two periods, before and after the arrival of humans.

Before the arrival of humans the indigenous inhabitants lived in relative peace.  The two preeminent races, elves and dwarves, lived in harmony, primarily to their disparate geographical preferences.

The arrival of humans changed the balance of power and shattered the fragile peace that had existed.  The human’s rapid expansion and imperialistic nature soon placed them in direct competition with the elves.

The elves and humans fought a series of bitter wars for control over Lemnos, lasting over 400 years.  These wars nearly destroyed both races, with the humans eventually gaining the upper hand.  The elves, facing total defeat, negotiated a treaty with the humans while they still had enough force to bargain with strength.  The treaty ceded all elvish territory to the humans with the majority of the elves returning to their ancestral home, the location of which is unknown.  Those elves who wished to remain were allowed to do so and agreed to abide under human rule and were granted full citizenship.

The peace was soon shattered as the humans began fighting amongst themselves, aligning with the regional powers who had ruled before the humans united to fight the elves.  The next 500 years was a period of short alliances and fierce war between rival cities.  Eventually King Glaucus of Kohlis gained the upper hand by uniting with Churberg and defeating Caulderon and Nepeth.

The humans lived in peace and prosperity for the next 300 years until hordes of marauding orcs poured out of the Dread Mountains.  The dwarves and humans formed an alliance and defeated the orcs 25 years later.  The orc leader agreed to nominal human rule and has honored this agreement since.

Lemnos is currently in a state of political flux.  After a thousand years of rule, the humans have become complacent and the king rules some areas in name only.  The dukes of each region now look upon the crown with ambitious eyes and political machinations abound.  The orcs have also grown in numbers, forming camps and towns of their own, and grow restless under human rule.  The elves are also displeased with the current king and the humans failure to keep the orc population in check, and the wisest of the human sages look to the oceans and wonder what become of the elves who left so long ago.

It is in this world the adventurer must make his or her way.  The wars over the last 1300 years and the relative newness of humans to this land leave much that must be learned and explored.  Those with a strong sword and great courage will surely make a name for themselves.
